Meet Dr. Sherer
Dr. Emily Sherer joined HealthNet in 2012 and serves as a pediatrician and physician co-leader at People’s Health & Dental Center. Here’s more about Dr. Sherer.
The basics: She and her husband Mark live in Indianapolis with their two daughters – Ella, 6 and Lauren 3. Mark is a dentist and has a private practice downtown.
Growing up: She grew up on the west side of Indianapolis, graduating from Ben Davis High School. “I used to rent VHS movies at the Blockbuster that was located in the building that now houses HealthNet West,” says Dr. Sherer.
She graduated from Wheaton College near Chicago as an interdisciplinary studies major (biology, psychology, Christian formation and ministry) and Spanish minor. She completed medical school and residency training at IU School of Medicine.
Outside work: “I enjoy spending time outside, playing with my kids, traveling, and reading. We are also very involved at our church, Englewood Christian Church.”
Why this type of work: “I have always enjoyed helping other people. I took an anatomy and physiology class in high school which I really liked and started considering a career in medicine after that. Before medical school I spent time volunteering with a pediatrician and really enjoyed it.”
Why HealthNet: “I like working with the patient population that HealthNet serves. I also appreciate HealthNet’s focus on outpatient primary care. The support services available for both our patient’s and employees was also valuable to me.”
You might be surprised to know: She spent time in Spain, Guatemala, and Ecuador during college and medical school to learn Spanish.
Favorite TV shows: “I enjoy comedies. My husband and I enjoy watching Big Bang Theory and Blackish.”
Favorite snack food: “Chocolate coconut almond fudge ice cream from Graeters.”
Favorite type of music: “Because I have young daughters I mainly listen to the Moana soundtrack lately. When I can I like to listen to NPR.”
Guilty pleasure: “Looking for new recipes on Blue Apron.”
If money were no object: “I’d be doing exactly what I am doing – working as a pediatrician and as co-leader at People’s Health Center.”
